Can a dentist save my vertically split tooth rather than extracting it? I’ve seen two dentists, and both want to extract it. If a dentist isn’t in-network, I would pay out-of-pocket to save my tooth. Am I running out of time? – Thanks. Garreth from SC
Garreth,
It is challenging to find a dentist willing to save a split tooth. Getting treatment within a day or two of the fracture is vital. When that time passes, a dentist cannot save your tooth.
Can a Dentist Save a Vertically Split Tooth?
After an X-ray and exam, a dentist may decide to try to save a vertically split tooth. However, a dentist must be willing and know how to try to save your tooth, which requires careful technique. Very few dentists are willing to use a technique like this:
- Fit the pieces of the tooth back together perfectly
- Hold the pieces in place with a dental crown
- Monitor the tooth for the long-term
The technique may succeed but must be completed within a day or two of the vertical fracture. Also, a dentist can decide whether the technique might work after an exam and X-ray.
Unfortunately, you may lose the tooth depending on when the fracture occurred. However, prompt care with an extraction, bone grafting if needed, and a dental implant can prevent dental problems from missing teeth. You can get a third opinion from an experienced dentist with post-graduate implant training to discuss your options.
