How Can I Find a New Dentist for My Porcelain Veneers Case?

I live more than 100 miles from your office, but I need to find a dentist to take over my porcelain veneers case. I had several visits with a dentist, but I am afraid to let him prepare my teeth. I saw some of his patients’ photos during my first visit with him, and I am getting increasingly skeptical. I think it is wise to switch dentists.  I’m looking for a cosmetic dentist that is closer to home. I don’t want to have five consultations and x-rays from each dentist. My time is limited, and I would like to narrow my choices at home. Will you please give me tips on what to look for in a cosmetic dentist? Thanks, Gene

1. Check patient reviews

Look for online reviews about the dentist. You can check Google My Business pages, Yelp, and Facebook reviews. You can type a dentist’s name, followed by the word reviews to find other sources.

2. Look for the dentist’s website and a smile gallery

An accomplished cosmetic dentist has a website. Read the doctor’s bio to learn about their training, experience, continuing education, and experience in cosmetic dentistry. Also, look for a smile gallery of the dentist’s patients and before-and-after photos of the dentist’s work with porcelain veneers. Look for current pictures of cases like yours.

3. Schedule a complimentary visit

Most cosmetic dentists offer a complimentary consultation. Tell the scheduler that you want to see the office, meet the dentist, and discuss treatment options. Many dental practices will schedule five or ten minutes with the dentist or staff to discuss your smile goals. You will have an opportunity to decide if you would feel comfortable at the dental practice. Visit at least two cosmetic dentists before you choose a provider.

Can I switch dentists in the middle of porcelain veneers treatment?

I scheduled an appointment with a prosthodontist for eight porcelain veneers.  He finished the work, and I am wearing temporary veneers. But I want to switch dentists and get my veneers redone. The shape of the porcelain veneers is off. The doctor used digital design to show me before-and-after pictures, but this smile is unacceptable. Also, the veneers fit weirdly around my gums and make them look puffy. I brought some “before” smile pictures to the dentist to show him my former tooth shape and how my gums look now. Although the temporary veneers are hiding the stains on my teeth, they do not look natural. I no longer trust the prosthodontist. I’m nervous about my final veneers. How could they look any better when the temporary veneers are messed up? Can I switch to another dentist in the middle of porcelain veneers treatment? – Thank you. Bethel from GA

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the prosthodontist. You disagree with the results he produced because you want to be confident about your smile. If you are not, it will affect your self-esteem, and you will smile less, affecting your quality of life.

It seems that your prosthodontists’ goal was to hide the stains on your teeth, not to give you a smile you love. You are in the wrong office, and it is wise to discontinue your treatment there.

Absolutely. You can switch dentists in the middle of porcelain veneers treatment. Your temporary veneers are not what you want. And you explained that to your prosthodontist. If you proceed with treatment and are dissatisfied with the results, you will have to switch dentists anyway. Why waste any more time or money?

How to Find a New Dentist

Look for a new dentist by asking friends or family members for recommendations on a cosmetic dentist. Also, look in your area for dentists with advanced, post-graduate cosmetic dentistry training. Most accomplished cosmetic dentists have before-and-after photos on their website, including porcelain veneers patients.

Schedule consultations with two cosmetic dentists to examine your teeth and explain what they will do to ensure they hide your teeth stains and give you a smile that you love.
