I lost a tooth last March and could not afford to do anything about it. Two weeks ago, I scheduled an appointment with a dentist who has sent several postcards to our home advertising affordable fees. The dentist recommends a partial denture for replacing the tooth because I cannot afford implants. He showed me pictures, and I noticed the metal ends right away. I asked the dentist if he could cover the ends because I am sensitive to metals. I do not wear jewelry because of it. But the dentist told me that was not an option, and the metal would not fit around my teeth. I was so disappointed because I thought I had a solution. The missing tooth is my right incisor, so it is obvious when I smile. Are there any coated metal or non-metal ends for partial dentures that my dentist may not know about? – Thank you. Nasir M. from Miami
Nasir,
Thank you for your question.
Unfortunately, coating the metal clasps on a partial denture would make them inflexible and increase discomfort. The clasps need to fit securely around your teeth and must be as thin as possible. But there is an alternative.
Alternative to a Partial with Metal Claps
An alternative to a partial denture with metal clasps is a brand with nylon or plastic ends. Creo Clearflex®, Valplast®, tcs®, and DuraFlex™ are four removable tooth replacement brands with pink or clear plastic fasteners. A dentist who offers non-metal alternatives may use another brand. The appliances are durable and flexible. Although plastic or nylon materials may not be as sturdy as metal, they will keep your partial denture in place.
If you have metal allergies or sensitivities, look for a dentist with advanced cosmetic dentistry training who offers holistic or biological alternatives to support your oral health. A cosmetic dentist will ensure your partial denture functions well and looks natural.
