When a dentist can’t preserve a natural tooth, a dental implant may be recommended for a replacement. In Sugar Land, Dr. Siny Thomas adheres to a process to ensure your treatment is successful.
Assessing Your Oral Health
We start with an assessment to determine what treatment will improve your oral health. We will take x-rays and digital impressions of your teeth to determine if dental implants or another solution is best for your case.
Bone Grafting and Tooth Removal
A dental implant is inserted in your jawbone, so enough bone volume is needed to support the implant. If you lack bone volume, Dr. Thomas may use grafting to build up the bone. After a few months of healing time, he will place the implant.
Implant Placement
An implant is a metal root form that Dr. Thomas places in your jawbone. A dental crown—or artificial tooth—is attached to the top of the implant. Implant surgery only takes a few minutes.
The Integration Period
Osseointegration is the period when your implant and jawbone fuses. You may be given a temporary tooth replacement during the healing period. Or if you’re receiving implants to support a denture, you’ll wear a temporary denture.
The Restorative Process
Restoration replaces the portion of your tooth above the gumline. Depending on how many missing teeth are being replaced with dental implants, Dr. Thomas will attach dental crowns, a dental bridge, or a denture.
A Collar
Dr. Thomas places a metal collar over each healing implant. It will guide the growth of your gums around the implant.
Placing the Abutment
After an implant heals, an abutment—or connector—is screwed on the top of the implant. A dental crown is attached to the abutment. Multiple implants and abutments support a denture.
The Permanent Crown
Dr. Thomas will attach the crown to the abutment—or a denture onto multiple abutments—to complete your smile.
Post-Operative Symptoms
You can expect a small amount of bleeding, swelling, or pain after implant surgery.
Dental Implant Care
After your dental implants heal, brush your twice daily and floss between them daily. Schedule regular cleanings and exams to maintain good oral hygiene.
