Since late June this year, my dentist has tried to correct my implant crown color three times. The crown color is three shades whiter than my natural teeth and the crown next to it. I can see the color difference regardless of whether I am in indoor or outdoor light. The tooth is my upper right lateral incisor, so it shows when I smile. Last week, the dentist said I had requested so many changes that I should be happy that the implant has not loosened after trying three different crowns. My dentist’s comments about a loose crown make me wonder whether I should forget about trying to get the crown color right and ask for a partial refund. A loose crown is a problem that I cannot manage or afford. Should I stop asking my dentist to get the crown color right? Thanks. Andrea from Decatur, GA
Andrea,
We are sorry to hear about your experience with your dental crown and that your dentist has not resolved it. A skilled cosmetic dentist ensures that the implant crown color matches the surrounding crowns and your natural teeth. We will explain how you can benefit from a second opinion.
Does Removing a Crown Damage the Dental Implant?
Removing an implant crown will not damage the dental implant if a skilled dentist removes it. Cosmetic dentists understand tooth shades and how to achieve a color match with ceramic crowns.
Will You Need a New Implant Crown If Yours Is Too White?
If an implant crown is too white, a cosmetic dentist can use a process like the one below:
- Draw a picture of the tooth and label the areas of the crown that require a specific shade and tint to match the surrounding teeth
- Send instructions to a dental ceramic regarding tooth shade
- Place the crown over your tooth and check it for color and fit
- Take digital photographs of your smile and send them to the ceramist to examine the color differences when the color does not match.
An experienced dentist will cement the crown when you agree that it feels well and matches the color of your surrounding teeth.
