How Long Does Sensitivity Last with New Porcelain Veneers?

Tooth sensitivity after getting new porcelain veneers may last for a few days. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, you may experience some sensitivity. But some patients report sensitivity that lasts longer depending on the dentist’s work and your teeth’s general sensitivity level. If you continue to experience sensitivity beyond two weeks, schedule an appointment with your dentist.

Why Does Sensitivity Occur with Porcelain Veneers?

If you experience teeth sensitivity after getting new veneers, it may be from tooth preparation or the porcelain veneers process. Some factors that can create sensitivity include:

• Removing tooth decay
• Removing small amounts of tooth enamel to ensure the porcelain veneers fit snugly near your gumline
• Bonding or cementing materials that adhere the porcelain to your teeth
• Teeth that are out of alignment

What Can You Do About Teeth Sensitivity After Veneers?

You may be able to manage teeth sensitivity after veneers by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Over the next few days, try to discern if the sensitivity is less frequent.
